Counselor's Corner
Instructor: Mrs. Bell
Welcome! My name is Mrs. Bell, the counselor at PNE.  The goal of the counseling office is to support the healthy growth and development of the total child (social, emotional, and academic) in his/her world of school, home, and community.  This process of growth is encouraged through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling, consultation with parents, teachers, and coordination of services.  We will revisit and continue to emphasize character education, as well as visit universal topics such as conflict resolution, bullying, drug awareness, and personal safety throughout the year.  Please, contact me if you have any questions or concerns at 409-722-2262 or kbell@pngisd.org.

Buddy Benches
The Buddy Bench idea was started by an 8 year old boy, named Christian, who lives in Pennsylvania. He had a great idea to have a bench on the playground designated for students who arenít sure who to play with, who to talk to, or who just want to assess a situation before joining in a group. He called it the "Buddy Bench", a place to meet and play with new friends or old friends.

Sometimes, especially on the playground, students forget how to be kind. Sometimes they leave people out, say mean things, or donít share. The Buddy Benches are here to remind all students to be kind and to reach out to one another. Port Neches believes that Christian's idea can help eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the playground. Thanks to the Optimist Club and Hauck Enterprises, our school now has TWO Buddy Benches: one on the front playground and one on the back playground. Port Neches Elementary wants to be a school where people help each other, cheer each other on, share with one another, think of others and focus on building a strong community.

The Buddy Bench is part of a bigger initiative at Port Neches Elementary to create a culture of kindness. This means being kind in all the things we do, say, and think! We can do it! We hope that this initiative can help you talk with your child about being kind, inclusive, proactive and making new friends.

C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club
Fourth Graders are able to become a member of the C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club, which is an anti-drug campaign. It stands for:
  • Cool
  • Honest
  • Intelligent
  • Clear Headed
  • Keen
  • Energetic
  • Not interested in drugs
By agreeing to remain drug free, the students receive a C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club t-shirt and participate in activities to learn about making responsible choices.
Local law enforcement helped with our C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club rally this year. We appreciate everything you do for us!
A Big THANK YOU to the Optimistic Club for supporting PNE and the C.H.I.C.K.E.N. Club!

Social Benefits:

  • Fosters feelings of safety and acceptance
  • Teaches to give rather than receive
  • Trusting relationships are formed

Research also shows that therapy dogs are beneficial to students who have a difficult time with reading fluency and reading comprehension. Walter and Jude will be available for students that need that extra encouragement and confidence to become a great reader.

Small Groups
Students are invited to participate in small group counseling sessions. Children who share a common concern meet together with the counselor to talk and to share activities. Please be aware these activities are offered through our school. If your child will benefit from any of these groups, please contact me. Participation in each of these groups will involve weekly meetings during the school day. At times during the year your child may come home with a letter requesting participation in a group. The following groups are available during our school year:
  • Divorce
  • Grief
  • Responsibility/Behavior
  • Self esteem
  • Social Skills
  • Other groups as needed
